Well, it has been unveiled in Chicago, and it measures a gargantuan 15 feet wide and 13 feet tall - definitely not something you are able to tote around and chat with. Currently placed at Fidelity Plaza in downtown Chicago, those who dropped by the unveiling yesterday were able to make free, unlimited phone calls or texts on the gigantic device, although we’d think that text messaging on this will surely take a whole lot longer than placing a phone call. The device relies on service from Cricket and is a working replica of the Samsung Messager, making for a great publicity stunt. Needless to say, you can find this achievement listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, that’s for sure.

It’s hours of fun watching them run round and round attempting to catch that little electronic device and chew it to pieces. You can also then track how many miles your dog runs when running all through your house. This pedometer is capable of tracking four feet instead of the two that your average pedometer tracks. It is also able to disregard any shaking or nodding from the dog. On the LCD screen it can show one of 32 icons that will illustrate your dog’s various activities throughout the day, such as taking a nap. It also works as a name tag and runs on a button cell that will work for about a month. It comes in four different colors and can be purchased for 4725 Yen or about $55. Personally, $55 seems a bit steep to me for something that’s just going to become a chew toy.

Homeloo’s Jumbo Gear Clock

It’s always obnoxious having a wall clock you have to stand excessively close to in orderto read it properly. I have one of those, I can never see the placement of the hands from a distance. Yet, I keep it because I like the overall look of the clock. I imagine a lot of people will pick up this clock for the same reasons, the overall look is fascinating. Even if the watch face is overly difficult to read from a distance. If they had varied the color of the hands a little from its background it would have helped a great deal.

However, with them both being one color it does simplify the look of the overall clock. Having fifty exposed gears is plenty to clutter the clock up by themselves without adding a contrasting color to the clock hands. The clock is 16” and yes, all of those gears do move. The larger gear behind the watch hands also spins, it spins clockwise while the rest of the gears spin counterclockwise. The clock will cost you $78.

NASA new Lunar Rover Vehicle concept

NASA has come out with a Small Pressurized Rover Concept which set to be put in service by year 2020. It is a futuristic recreational vehicle mounted on six sets of wheels, 12 wheels altogether. This battery powered rover can speed up to 6 mph.

“The new prototype has a pressurized cab and is fitted out with leather seats and bunks. It would allow a crew of two astronauts to take extended exploration trips for up to two weeks at a time, covering distances of up to 625 miles, says Craig, the NASA program’s manager.”

The vehicle is being tested in a remote corner of Arizona which found to have similar surface conditions to those found on the moon. It has a range of up to 625 miles (1,000 km).

iBangle puts the iPod on the wrist

When it comes to iPods and other MP3 players, not much has changed about them in the past few years. Sure, the memory is getting better all the time, but the design is the same: they clip on the belt and the obligatory wired earplugs.

This iBangle design concept is a little bit daring as the design fits right on your wrist instead of clipping to your belt. Don’t let its loose look fool you, the iBangle won’t easily slip off like other “clip-on” MP3 players. Apparently, that tiny blue button that you see in the illustration somehow fills the blue area with air, so it fits snug, but hopefully not too snug.

As for the earphones, forget about it! The audio sound is transmitted via wireless earbuds. So how do you navigate through tracks, you may ask? Just use the multi-touch track pad.

Now, if only it had a way to play video files. Perhaps a screen could be put on it, and the iBangle could pass for a watch.

Too bad this iBangle remains only a concept from designer Gopinath Prasana. Apple, this could easily be the next big thing for MP3 Players, so please feel free to put one million iBangles into production.

Husqvarna Solar-powered Robot Lawnmower

As you can see by the title, this Husqvarna Solar-Powered Robot Lawnmover deserves its own acronym. Of course, HSPRL is really lame, and I suppose the Swedish-based company will have to change a few of the descriptors into synonyms that start with vowels so they could get an actual word.

This HSPRL (just humor me for this article’s sake) was announced at the Green Industry and Equipment Expo 2008. I’m certain that this isn’t the first autonomous robot lawn mower, but I’m guessing this one won’t be the last.

Of course, the real selling point of the HSPRL is the fact that it is solar powered, which doesn’t sound like an industry first. This limits it to daylight usage, but it uses a rechargeable nickel metal hydride battery.

This device weighs in at about 22-pounds, and can work a half-acre lot of grass with a wire that can be slightly buried or staked in place as a safety border. Speaking of safety, the Solar-powered lawnmower has some great safety features. For example, it will automatically shut off its blades when it is lifted, and built-in sensors to work around objects.

Unfortunately, the Husqvarna solar-powered lawnmower does not have a release date or price. I could give you an estimation based on another model the company produces, so we’re looking at about $2,000.

First China Solar-powered Car

China’s Zhejiang 001 Group has come up with the solar-powered car, the car was shown at the car exhibition in Hangzhou. The group has produced over 10 units of them and each will be sold at 38,000 yuan (US$5,560). The car is capable of absorbing 95 percent of the solar energy it takes in but can only transform 14% to 17% of that into electricity, quite similar to others solar car. The car can travel 150km after 30 hours of solar charging, yeah an hour of charge will get you 5km. No words if the car will be shipped outta China.

Here is a new concept for the Playstation Portable I hope to see in the near future. This PSP2 design concept by Tai Chiem probably won’t be made anytime soon, but it really should.

I mean, just look at the scrolling OLED screen! I think we are close to perfecting that technology, but not that close. Still, it would be nifty to have a screen that can roll up into the PSP itself. No more tiny screen, but it needs some sort of electrical charge to hold it up. I guess it uses the same “memory cloth” technology as shown in Batman Begins.

Not only does it have the rolling and scrolling action going on, but the side speakers fold inwards, presumably to hold the screen into place when it is rolled up. Rumor has it the speakers are the controls for the device. This appears to the only method of control, as I don’t see a controller or buttons.

This technology is too good to use on just portable video game consoles. I think that every cellular phone needs to be this wand-shaped thing that you can use to take and receive calls, and then roll it out to watch videos or whatever applications you care to run.

Well, as I said before, the PSP2 probably won’t be available any time soon, so if you want a new style of PSP, you’ll have to get the PSP-3000.

World’s Smallest Walking Robot

The Human shaped Robo-Q has been released in Japan. This 3.4cm high Robo-Q has been claimed as the world’s smallest robot. It is equipped with an artificial intelligence enabling it to navigate and play games and built in sensors. Conof’s C-shaped lamp

If Sesame Street is planning on having “C” as the letter of the day, they should definitely put Conof’s USB desk lamp in the spotlight. As it is, this C-shaped lamp creates its own spotlight.

All that is required is plugging the lamp into the USB port, and you will have some wonderful brightness to go with your work. By the way, the lamp can swivel 270 degrees, so you can select your own personal level of brightness.

Unfortunately, I don’t really have much information about this product, but I have heard (and you can see from the photo) that the C-lamp doubles as an iPod dock. That means that you can plug it in and presumably charge and download iTunes stuff on it. Like I said, I don’t have any more information, so I’m not certain if the C-lamp can double as a speaker.

I will have to give points to Conof’s simplicity of design. The Bauhaus form follows function rule applies here, as there is a stand and the light, all in a simple shape everyone recognizes from everyone’s favorite third letter of the alphabet.

My sources don’t tell me when the Conof USB Lamp will be available, or what the price will be.

Nikon Media Port UP puts TV on your eye

Oh no, not another one of these video headsets that still have yet to catch on. This particular one that you see here is from camera giant Nikon and called the Media Port UP.

Most of these video headsets that we have reported on, like the myvu, are usually designed to take video files off of the iPod and make them a private experience for the viewer. I’ve got to give kudos to the Media Port UP because it is WiFi ready, and allows the user to view files with the Windows Media Player.

So, are we looking at the next stage of mobile computing? No more laptops or netbooks, but surf the web while you’re walking around. Well, it does have a memory of 4 to 8 gigabyte hard drive.

Other specs include 120 minutes of playback time for video, and 270 minutes of playback time for music. The Media Port UP is even designed with some hands-free operation. So when a user moves his or her head, it somehow affects the playing.

Not bad, but does it have to be so ugly? I mean, look at the lady in this picture. I feel like she should be telling me “Resistance is Futile”. Would it have been even more freaky if they designed it to view with two eyes. Right now, you should be able it at the Up Store for about $580.

Sony OLED Flexible Display: I’m Loving It

Sure, this isn’t the first time that we reported on Sony’s OLEDs before. First unveiled at CES in January, these babies have been on a lot of gadget lovers’ minds ever since. The Sony wireless XEL-1 TV is on sale for about $2,500, and the saga of the Sony OLED continues with a new development of a flexible 11-inch display.

This pliable TV still has its 0.3mm thickness (or thinness) which is easy enough to get a paper cut, or, in this case, a screen cut. These OLEDs don’t come cheap, and because this tech is so new, it probably won’t get any cheaper any time soon. Once it does, just imagine the possibilities!

I mean, the age of e-paper will finally arrive! That little stack of papers on your desk will soon be replaced by OLED displays of every type. So, there will be less trees being killed, but more of whatever materials used to make the OLEDs, I suppose.

Sure, there is more applications for these, like pull-out scrolling displays on cellular phones. Lest we forget that our flatscreen TVs will soon be nigh two-dimensional!

Yes, the possibilities are endless, but it has hardly begun. There is no word when this tiny screen will be available to the general public. Let’s hope the price isn’t too steep.

As a freelance writer, I live by my laptop. Sometimes, I work a little too hard and I just want to get a little bit of sleep. When I do, I usually just push my laptop aside and uncomfortably turn my folded arms into pillows.

Perhaps this is why Ivonne Dippmann designed the iSleep pillow. The purpose of the iSleep is to make that uncomfortable piece of plastic and metal and turn it into a place to rest my head.

In all honesty, I never tried to use my laptop for a pillow because it is just plain hard. I am also worried about messing up the insides of my laptop by putting the weight of my head on it. The iSleep solves this weight problem by attaching to the laptop’s exhaust vent, and the warm air inflates for some nice padding on the iSleep.

Not only is the pillow warm, but it has an integrated speaker that will play music. I can only assume that your laptop programs what tunes you will hear as you drift away to dreamland. There is even an alarm tone to wake you up when needed, and I’m not certain if that is part of the iSleep or you have to program the laptop for that.

So far, this iSleep is only a concept, but it is something that I could certainly use.

Aurora Color Changing Clock knows what time it is

There are times where I am sitting around working, and I lose track of the time. So I check the time on my clock, and the clock is facing the other way. Wouldn’t you know it!

It appears that Aurora has figured out a solution to this time-telling dilemma by creating a clock that changes color every hour. It has twelve colors that represent the hours of the day, and it might take a little while before you learn what color is what hour.

So, the color won’t tell you the time to the exact minute, but it will give you a broad sense of what time it is. I’m not certain if the colors gradually change, or if it just changes like a traffic light on the hour.

Personally, I would prefer the gradual change, and then get used to sensing the time by the minute once I get used to the color shades. By the way, the LCD display is backlit by whatever display color is on the exterior.

The Aurora Color Changing Clock has a translucent rubber housing, which allows the lights to go on and off with a tap. The alarm clock will flash when it is time to get up.

So if you like the idea of this chameleon of a clock, feel free to get it at the London Science Museum online store for about $26.

The Hand Grenade Mouse Mod

If you’ve been feeling like your computer setup isn’t nearly intimidating enough, a hand grenade would probably be more than enough to make it seem more intense. After all that online gaming, you need to feel all powerful behind your computer. A wicked looking case and a glowing keyboard aren’t always enough. Although, gaming mouses do have all those fancy extra buttons, they just aren’t nearly cool enough. No, the world needs hand grenade mouses for all.

There aren’t a ton of details on the mouse itself, but it was a mod job which was posted online here by the modders. The mouse is actually made out of an old grenade casing, so it gives a slightly more authentic feel. However, being made out of the real stuff it’s not exactly made to be ergonomic at all. It’s just meant to look cool. The modders actually went through the trouble of wiring up the trigger to function as the left mouse button. So overall it’s a cool mod, I just hope if you give it a try you don’t use your computer too much or your wrist will soon grow to hate you.

USB Hollywood Film Kit: Lights! Webcamera Action!

I’m sure most have you have seen the film Cloverfield, the J.J. Abrams monster movie that was filmed in the style of a handheld movie camera. Contrary to what is depicted in the film, the camera used for shooting that film was a very fancy high-definition camera, not a Best Buy handheld.

I only bring this up because I have also had a great idea for a movie that is filmed in the style of a webcam. I don’t exactly have a plot just yet, but I noticed in my test filming of potential action that webcams produce shotty image quality.

This is why the USB Hollywood Film kit is pertinent to my future indie blockbuster. This kit comes with a webcam that looks like a real movie camera, and a separate spotlight for more lighting, which has the Hollywood-style flaps.

Both the camera and spotlight are mounted on flexible arms, and each require separate USB ports. The camera is compatible with Windows XP SP2, Vista, plus Mac OS 10.4.8 and up.

According to my source, the USB Hollywood Film kit is not available in the United States, and there is no word on price. There is also no word from J.J. Abrams on the status of my webcam movie, other than “we’ll get back to you”.
